BORG USM Races for a Greener Future at Penang Bridge International Marathon 2024 (PBIM 2024)
Penang, Malaysia, 15 December 2024 - In a unique blend of sports and environmental advocacy, the Barn Owl Research Group (BORG) and USAINS are set to participate in the Penang Bridge Marathon 2024 to raise awareness about sustainable pest management and wildlife conservation. This initiative underscores BORG's mission to promote barn owls as natural pest control agents, offering an eco-friendly alternative to harmful pesticides and playing a vital role in managing rodent populations in agricultural and suburban areas.
"The Penang Bridge Marathon offers an incredible platform to engage with the community and share the importance of sustainable solutions for pest management," said Associate Prof. Dr. Hasber Salim, Principal researcher and founder of BORG. "Through this event, we aim to inspire others to consider the ecological benefits of working with nature rather than against it."
BORG USM has successfully established barn owl populations in key ecosystems, such as paddy fields and oil palm plantations. The group’s initiatives also focus on public education, highlighting the critical role barn owls play in maintaining ecological balance and reducing the reliance on chemical pesticides.
Participants from BORG and USAINS will run under the theme “Run for Nature: Sustainable Solutions for a Greener Future.” A total of 24 participants will take part: 8 in the full marathon and 16 in the half marathon. “We’re targeting awareness about the wildlife conservation of barn owls and their role in sustainable future” said Dr. Hasber Salim. “These amazing creatures help us manage rodents naturally, reducing the need for chemicals that harm the environment.”
We see the Penang Bridge Marathon as a powerful catalyst for change, advocating environmental causes and driving collective action toward a sustainable future. As thousands of participants run across the iconic bridge, the event unites the community in support of wildlife conservation and eco-friendly solutions. BORG and USAINS are calling on both runners and spectators to join the movement and help protect nature. With Penang’s stunning landscapes as the backdrop, the marathon highlights the state’s commitment to environmental responsibility and its role in fostering a greener, more sustainable future. Dr. Hasber expressed gratitude to the industry partners who are helping drive positive environmental change across Penang.
