Thermal property is one of the most important material properties that may significantly affect the overall performance and reliability of an engineering product. To fully understand the behaviour of engineering materials with respect to the processing and operational temperature, it is essential to acquire capability and knowledge to assess and evaluate parameters influencing them. In this course, fundamental concept of thermal properties will first be explained. Relationship between microstructure, geometrical factor, type of engineering material and other important factors that may affect the thermal properties of a material will be elaborated based on real life case studies. In addition, the course will also cover typical and commonly used characterization techniques to measure and obtain common thermal properties. Example-based explanation will be used to describe, explain, differentiate, and compared each characterization techniques. Advantages and disadvantages of each technique will be provided by showing using some industry and research type of cases.
